The use of wood chips has been increasing significantly. In Europe, it has already achieved a 50% share of all solid biomass used for energy purposes.
Problems with oversized pieces, a high ash and moisture content, which significantly affect not only the efficiency of boilers, but also their lifetime, triggered the creation of an international GoodChips® certification.
Who is this certification designed for?
The international GoodChips® certification of wood chips and hog fuel is valid regardless any geographical limitations, i.e. the certification will be carried out not only in Europe but the intention is to offer it also in other countries.
This certification focuses on the quality of wood chips and hog fuel used for energy purposes.
This certification applies to every player along the supply chain that want to sell GoodChips® marked products.
TÜV NORD Czech, as the only certification company in the Czech Republic, offers the GoodChips® certification of wood chips and hog fuel. It is another certification of wood biomass offered by TÜV NORD Czech - Certification Body Certifying Products (COV) 3170, which builds on a very successful ENplus® certification of wood pellets.
Certified companies – suppliers of certified wood chips are marked with the GoodChips® logo and, at the same time, this logo guarantees the quality of wood chips and hog fuel according to the GoodChips® certification. Bioneregy Europe owns this brand, as well as another worldwide spread ENplus® certification.
How does the certification process work?
The GoodChips® certification scheme is similar to the ENplus® certification. The essential characteristic of it lays in the fact, that a manufacturer, supplier of processing services or a trader involved in the GoodChips® certification of wood chips and hog fuel through the National Partner will be - after an operational inspection - certified by TÜV NORD Czech Certification Body and will receive a GoodChips® mark for its products.
The certification also includes inspection and determination of physico-chemical properties. As a result, wood chips and hog fuel will be marketed in a clearly defined and sustainable quality class. Users of wood chips or hog fuel for heating in boilers, the heating of residential and public buildings or industrial premises can consequently precisely define the quality of wood chips or hog fuel that will be supplied to them by the GoodChips® certified entities.
Both parties, i.e. customers as well as suppliers will benefit from this certification:
- wood chips and hog fuel of a sustainable high quality
- reduction of necessary control steps for wood chips intake
- higher energy use of wood chips of a guaranteed quality in the entire scope of deliveries'
- protection of manufacturers that work according to best practices, in particular against new market
players who are not familiar with biomass
- easier communication among entities - international trade with a reference to standardized classes
- competitive advantage through product differentiation based on the presence/absence of a GoodChips® trademark
Last but not least, the GoodChips® mark holders can benefit from more favourable conditions, provided by Bioenergy Europe until 2021.
