EN 15085-2 - Welding of Railway Vehicles and Components

Welding is a special process in manufacture of railway vehicles and their parts. ECWRV (European Committee for Welding of railway Vehicles) is established guideline to promote cooperation among parts involved in welding of railway vehicles,

1. NSA (National Safety Authorities).
2. MCM (Manufacturer Certification Body) and
3. Manufacturer

ECWRV also provide technical interpretation of EN 15085 standards.

EN 15085 standards series define Certification and Quality requirements for the welding of railway vehicle, component for new and repair.

Manufacturers those would like to carry out welding work on rail vehicles and vehicle components, must have their manufacturing system Certified to EN 15085-2. System shall be established to determine weld Performance Class, quality levels of imperfections, personnel qualifications (weld & NDE) and define welding system to achieve quality during production and the demonstration of the required quality by inspection.

EN 15085 consists of five parts

• Part 1: General
• Part 2: Quality requirements and certification of welding manufacturer
• Part 3: Design requirements
• Part 4: Production requirements
• Part 5: Inspection, testing and documentation

EN 15085 Certification is done to Three Certification Levels, which are depend on Weld Performance Class, depend on safety relevance,

•  CL 1 - welded vehicles and components / welded parts with high safety relevance
• CL 2 - Components / welded parts of railway vehicles with a medium safety relevance
• CL 3- Components / weld-on-parts of railway vehicles with a low safety relevance

TUV Nord Systems GmbH & Co. KG, recognised by ECWRV as MCB, can perform Manufacturer Evaluation as Welding Manufacturer of Railway Component and Certify them to EN 15085-2
