The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) is a non-governmental and non-profit organization founded in 1993 to promote environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically sustainable management of the world's forests.

FSC®'s work is supported internationally by environmental and trade union organisations, representatives of indigenous peoples as well as companies from the forestry and wood-related industries.

The international organization Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) has developed standards for the certification of forests (Forest Management) and companies that trade, produce and sell FSC Chain of Custody.

FSC Forest Management certification is about certifying the forest by ensuring that forest management is carried out in a responsible and sound manner.

The FSC Chain of Custody standard describes a management system that aims to effectively monitor the raw materials used for the production of products in a company. This monitoring covers all stages of the processing of raw materials, up to delivery to consumers, ensuring that raw materials and subsequent processes have been used in accordance with the requirements of the standard and responsible forest management. The standard is aimed at sawmills, wholesalers, retailers and manufacturers of furniture and paper, publishers and printing companies.

FSC® certified companies demonstrate their commitment to environmental and ethical behaviour. Certification according to FSC requirements provides specific benefits to the certified company's Customers and Partners, such as:

• Increased confidence through documented compliance with the requirements of an internationally recognized standard
• Increased acceptance of wood and its products by Clients and Consumers who attach importance to the origin of the raw materials (timber)
• Acquisition of environmentally sensitive customers
• Use of the FSC® label as a marketing tool
• Proof that the wood does not come from controversial sources

TÜV HELLAS is able to carry out inspections through its parent company TÜV NORD CERT GmbH and issue accredited certificates for the FSC Chain of Custody standard. To date, TÜV NORD CERT has granted over 600 certificates to companies with paper and wood products.
