What is the purpose of ISO 45001?
According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), occupational accidents and occupational diseases remain at alarmingly high levels. In addition to the serious impact on workers' families, these incidents imply significant costs, both to businesses and to the wider economy.
ISO 45001 is the first global international standard for occupational health and safety management systems. It provides a structured compliance framework that enables any organisation - regardless of its size or sector of activity - to actively reduce workplace risks, enhancing the health, safety and well-being of workers.
What is the content of ISO 45001?
ISO 45001 follows the High Level Structure (HLS), thus facilitating the development of an integrated and effective management system. The new standard is aligned with ISO 14001:2015, enabling strong synergies to be created for integrated management systems. This means that extending the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) management system more easily complies with other standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 39001, making it highly beneficial in most cases.
One of the key new requirements of ISO 45001 is the risk-based approach, which is combined with the process approach to enhance prevention and effective risk management. In addition, the standard requires the involvement of all employees, regardless of the nature of their work - whether they are office workers, self-employed, service providers, contractors or anyone involved in the organisation's activities.
Particular emphasis is also placed on the active integration of workers into the OH&S management system through consultation, exploration of the organisational framework, greater responsibility of top management, as well as opportunity assessment and systematic analysis of the root causes of accidents, thus enhancing prevention and improvement of workplace safety.
What is the timeframe?
The international standard ISO 45001:2018 was published on 12 March 2018. A three-year transition period was set for the transition of certification from BS OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001, which ended on 11 March 2021.
From that date, all certificates issued under BS OHSAS 18001 have now become invalid as the transition period has now expired.
Now, Health & Safety Management Systems certification Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems is now exclusively carried out in accordance with ISO 45001.
