ISO 14067: Specification with guidance for the quantification of the carbon footprint of products (and services)

The international standard ISO 14067 provides requirements and guidelines for the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions at product (and service) level. It provides a consistent method for measuring, reporting and verifying the carbon footprint of products and services. It is applied internationally to all goods and services (e.g. building footprint, events/events, etc.).

What is involved

The standard facilitates Businesses and Organisations understanding of the environmental impact of their products and services and identifying opportunities to take action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What is a GHG Inventory (GHG Inventory) of greenhouse gases associated with products and services?

A product carbon footprint (PCF) is an important method for identifying and assessing the quantity and distribution of "operational emissions". The inventory takes into account all emissions during the life cycle of a product, e.g. production, transport (upstream and downstream from the Business and Organisation), energy consumption during use and the type of final disposal or recycling.

ISO 14067 verification - Quantification and reporting of product carbon footprint (CFP) based on ISO 14067

The ISO 14067 standard deals with only one category of impacts, namely that of climate change. Its scope does not include carbon offsetting and the reporting of CFP or partial CFP information. It is an emissions quantification standard and does not assess potential social, economic or other environmental aspects and impacts that arise during the life cycle of a product.

ISO 14067 is consistent with international life cycle assessment (LCA) standards, namely ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Benefits of verifying product emissions according to ISO 14067

The standard enables Businesses and Organisations to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their products and services throughout their life cycle. This helps to make more sustainable choices that reduce environmental impacts.

The Product or Service-related Greenhouse Gas Inventory supports Businesses and Organisations, government and consumers to assess and compare the climate impact of products and services. It is a valuable tool to help raise awareness of climate change and take targeted measures to reduce emissions.

Verification of the GHG Inventory related to products or services adds transparency and credibility to the sustainability efforts of Businesses and Organisations, demonstrating to stakeholders that the emissions of products and services are taken seriously. Not only are the increasing demands and expectations of stakeholders met, but a commitment to climate protection can also lead to a clear competitive advantage.

Some additional benefits of CFP verification are:

  • Calculation of the carbon footprint - the first step towards implementing an emissions reduction and offsetting strategy.
  • Better understanding of the product or service's emission profile to identify 'hot spots' and 'weak spots'.
  • Verification results in reliable Sustainability Reports
  • Transparent quantification and reporting of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reports
  • Reliable and comparable parameters for Businesses, Organisations and consumers
  • Improve efficiency across the value chain by taking measures to reduce emissions throughout the supply chain
  • Support the implementation of other standards, such as ISO 14001 (environmental management systems)
  • Consistency with other standards, such as ISO 14025 (environmental labelling) and inter alia ISO 14040 and ISO 14044
  • Legal and other compliance (if required)
  • Customer loyalty and market demand, as consumers increasingly value sustainable products and services, building trust
  • Fostering innovation, as ISO 14067 results in data, following detailed analysis and assessment of environmental impacts, which can lead to the optimisation and redesign of processes and the use of more efficient technologies to reduce emissions, e.g. use of renewable energy, waste reduction, etc.

Who it concerns

Carbon footprint verification of products and services is suitable for all Businesses and Organisations that want to quantify their environmental impacts and use the result of CFP emission calculations in their communication with their stakeholders, i.e. for their products, services, buildings, events.
