CARBON FOOTPRINT Carbon Footprint

This service is linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Solutions for business and the planet come through international standards

The ISO 14064 series of international standards was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The standards provide guidance and cover agency and project-level requirements for quantifying, monitoring, reporting and verifying greenhouse gas emissions.

It consists of three parts/standards:

ISO 14064-1: Specification with organization-level guidance for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals

ISO 14064-2: Specification with project-level guidance for quantifying, monitoring and reporting on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions or enhancing removals of greenhouse gas emissions and removals; ISO 14064-2: Specification with project-level guidance for quantifying, monitoring and reporting on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions or enhancing removals of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.

ISO 14064-3: Specification with guidance for the verification and validation of greenhouse gas declarations. Specifies the requirements of the process followed by verification bodies for the verification/validation of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reports.

In particular, for the calculation of carbon footprint of products, ISO 14067 Specification with guidance for quantifying the carbon footprint of products (and services) applies.

The strategic benefits of Businesses and Organizations using ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 to calculate and reduce the carbon footprint for their operations and products enable Businesses and Organizations to:

  • Demonstrate clear commitment to internal and external stakeholders to climate actions and carbon reduction targets
  • Meet regulatory and stakeholder requirements for emissions reporting
  • enhance the credibility of the publicly disclosed emissions data of the undertaking or organisation by providing reliable information for the undertaking's or organisation's communication strategy
  • identify opportunities to improve data collection processes
  • To provide assurances and confidence in the accuracy of the Greenhouse Gas Inventories
  • Guiding the Company's or organisation's strategy in the short, medium and long term towards net zero carbon
  • Addressing the climate impact of the Business or Organisation at an early stage by reducing any future carbon charges
  • Positioning Businesses and Organisations ahead of the competition, as mitigation of the Business or Organisation's climate change impact will be addressed in a timely manner
  • Legal and other compliance (e.g. compliance with Climate Law, customer requirements, etc.)
  • 'Operational Efficiency', as the process of monitoring and reporting on emissions often identifies areas where energy consumption and waste can be reduced, leading to savings and cost reductions.
  • The 'Market Advantage': companies and organisations that demonstrate environmental responsibility can enhance their brand reputation, attract environmentally conscious customers and potentially increase their market share.
  • "Access to new Markets", as compliance with international standards can present opportunities in global markets, especially where these standards are a prerequisite for doing business.

ISO 14064-1, ISO 14064-2, and ISO 14067 standards contribute to the achievement of specific United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) related, for example, to climate action (SDG 13) and responsible consumption and production (SDG 12). Each of these standards plays a critical role in environmental management and sustainability, directly supporting efforts to achieve specific SDGs.

TÜV NORD Greece (TÜV NORD) has long experience and experienced staff in GHG emission verifications, and is accredited in Greece by the ESYD with Certificate number 884-5, carrying out ETS verifications for GHG emissions trading since 2005 and then verifications according to other international standards.

The verification procedure for direct and indirect emissions followed by TÜV NORD Greece (TÜV NORD) includes:

a) the initial Verification (Verification)

(b) the initial Verification (Initial Verification); (b) the periodic annual Verification

The training based on ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 is an introduction for anyone involved in the development, implementation and management of greenhouse gases.

During the training he/she may receive a briefing on greenhouse gases, as well as on internal control from the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Coordinator, in order to gain the knowledge and understanding of ISO 14064 and ISO 14067 standards on which to build to develop emission control skills.
