GLOBALG.A.P. Good Agricultural Practice Framework

This service is linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

GLOBALG.A.P. is a joint effort of companies of the European food and agri-food retailing Euro Retail Produce Working Group, aiming to:

  • Establish globally agreed standards of common acceptance,
  • developing a framework of Good Agricultural Practice (G.A.P.),
  • the continuous improvement and understanding of good practice; and
  • open communication between consumers and production sectors including producers and exporters-importers.

The Good Agricultural Practice (GAP) Framework includes the implementation of:

  1. integrated pest management (IPM) systems
  2. Integrated Crop Management (ICM) systems

ICM (Integrated Pest Management) and ICM (Integrated Pest Management Systems) with the aim of short-term improvement and sustainability and the use of HACCP principles in conjunction with compliance with national and international legislation.

The purpose of the implementation of GLOBALG.A.P. is to respond to the growing consumer concerns on issues related to the(n):

  • Maintaining confidence in food safety
  • To maintain confidence in the safety of the food safety of consumers
  • Minimising the use of agrochemicals
  • Improving the efficiency of the use of natural resources
  • Ensuring a positive approach to health and safety of workers

For certification under GLOBALG.A.P. there are the following requirements for each inspection category:

Category 1: Requirements for Single Producer Certification

  • Annual internal inspection according to the requirements of the GLOBALG.A.P. protocol (by the producer)
  • At least one annual regular inspection in accordance with the requirements of the GLOBALG.A.P. protocol (by the certification body)
  • 10 % exceptional inspections out of the total number of inspections carried out by the body (by the certification body)

Category 2: Requirements for Producer Group Certification

  • The producer group shall keep a control and procedures manual
  • All members of the group should operate under the same system
  • All members of the group shall be inspected by an internal or external inspector
  • The internal inspection shall include all points of the GLOBALG.A.P. and shall be carried out on an annual basis
  • The sample of producers to be inspected for certification is equal to the square root of all producers (IAF guide)
  • 10% exceptional inspections in the total number of inspections carried out by the body (by the certification body)

The necessary documents of the GLOBALG.A.P. system are:

  • GLOBALG.A.P. Protocol: this is the requirements of the system with which the producer must comply
  • GLOBALG.A.P. General Regulation: It defines the management regulations of the system.
  • GLOBALG.A.P. Checkpoints and Compliance Criteria: Contains specific information on how the producer should comply with each requirement of the scheme
  • GLOBALG.A.P. Questionnaire: inspection points with which the producer should comply during the annual internal inspection.
