A core component of the EN 50600 standard is the definition of Availability Classes (AC). These classes provide a clear framework for determining the required level of redundancy and resilience based on your specific business needs.

The standard defines four distinct Availability Classes:

• Availability Class 1: Designed for low availability requirements. This class features a single path for power and cooling, with no redundant components. It is suitable for environments where downtime has minimal impact.
• Availability Class 2: Aimed at medium availability. While it still utilizes a single path, it incorporates redundant components to mitigate the risk of single points of failure.
• Availability Class 3: Built for high availability. This class features multiple paths (with one active) and redundant components. Crucially, it allows for concurrent maintainability, meaning components can be serviced without disrupting operations.
• Availability Class 4: The pinnacle of resilience, designed for very high availability. It utilizes multiple active paths and is fully fault-tolerant, ensuring continuous operation even in the event of a severe failure.

Beyond availability, EN 50600 places a strong emphasis on physical security and sustainability. The standard defines up to four Protection Classes across various domains, including unauthorized access, burglary, fire, and environmental hazards. For instance, a minimum of three protection classes must be implemented to safeguard against unauthorized access.
