ISO 55001:Asset Management

This service is linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The introduction of the ISO 55000 series of standards provides the framework for asset management based on harmonized principles. ISO 55001 is particularly targeted at the management of physical assets, but can also be used for other types of assets.

Regardless of which assets are to be included in this management system, a proactive asset management strategy with corresponding objectives and actions ensures that assets are managed effectively and economically throughout their life cycle.

This standard is vital for organisations wishing to maximise value through asset management processes while minimising operational risks and costs, thereby enhancing overall organisational performance and stakeholder satisfaction.

Implementing an asset management system and thus managing complex processes within the organisation also increases stakeholder confidence. Assessment and certification by an independent Certification Body such as TÜV NORD Greece provides security and credibility for the organisation and its shareholders.

  • Clear and effective asset management, based on appropriate processes and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Optimization of the asset management planning process based on valid data, which is particularly useful in asset digitization.
  • Maximising the efficiency and value of assets
  • Identify and reduce asset-related risks and exploit opportunities
  • Improved financial performance: managing asset-related costs and risks to improve profitability and efficiency
  • Facilitate key decisions regarding systematic planning and management of facilities and equipment
  • Sustainability: Promote responsible use of resources and sustainable asset management practices
  • Ensure compliance with rules, regulations and legislative requirements
  • The different needs of stakeholders are taken into account, thus improving the corporate image of the organisation, while developing competitive advantages

ISO 55001 is mainly characterised by its flexibility: it can be used regardless of the sector, type, size and complexity of the organisation and, based on the new single structure, can be easily combined with other management systems, for example ISO 9001 or ISO 41001.

  • Who can benefit from ISO 55001?

ISO 55001 is suitable for any asset-based organisation that relies on assets to achieve business objectives. This includes entities in sectors such as manufacturing, construction, property managers, utilities, transport and public services, among others.

  • What should be taken into account with regard to certificates in the context of recertification or surveillance?

Once the inspection process is completed, a certificate according to ISO 55001 is issued, which is valid for three years. The period of validity starts directly from the expiry of the previous certificate. This means that the expiry date of the new certificate corresponds to the normal three-year period (expiry date of the old certificate plus three years) if the process is carried out within the specified deadline or if the inspection and management of PM (non-conformities) are completed according to the schedule.

  • How does ISO 55001 relate to ISO 55000 and 55002?

ISO 55000 is a set of standards for asset management systems. ISO 55000 itself offers basic principles along with an overview of all the standards and also defines concepts, terms and definitions. 55002 provides further information on the practical implementation of systems in the form of best practice examples. ISO 55001 sets out the requirements for an asset management system.
