Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)
The Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a statement prepared by manufacturers that shows the environmental footprint of a product in a life cycle assessment (LCA). The Declaration signals the manufacturers’ commitment to measure and reduce the environmental impact of their products and services and these impacts are reported in a hyper-transparent manner. In order for the declarations of different products to be comparable, a specific procedure is followed based on the international standards ISO 14025, ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, while for each category of similar products, specific Product Category Rules (PCR) are followed. They can be developed for a variety of products and services, including the following categories:
- Building Products
- Food & Beverages
- Paper Products
- Furniture
- Textiles, Footwear & Clothing
- Vehicles & Transport Equipment
- Electricity, Energy & Fuels
- Machinery & Equipment
- Metal, Mineral, Plastic or Glass Products
- Chemical Products
- Infrastructure & Buildings
- Services
EPD can be performed by all the organizations, regardless of their size, and can reflect the continuous environmental improvement of products and services over time and communicate and add up relevant environmental information along a product's supply chain.
EPDs are based on principles inherent in the ISO standard for Type III environmental declarations (ISO 14025), giving them a wide-spread international acceptance. EPDs are verified by accredited organizations or persons and posted in international databases, where users can access them.
TÜV HELLAS (TÜV NORD), as part of its ongoing commitment to certification and sustainability, provides EPD verification services, collaborating with the organization 'EPD International' for various types of products.
