BRC Food – Food Safety for Private Label Products

BRC Food (Version 9)

The BRC standard was developed by the British Retail Consortium and is addressed to food suppliers who manufacture private label products on behalf of supermarkets, primarily in the United Kingdom.

It was first published in 1998, and since then, it has undergone several revisions, reflecting the evolving food safety requirements. Today, the standard is in its ninth edition.

It applies to food production companies, however, it does not cover commercial operations, product importation, distribution, or storage when these activities are carried out by third parties.
The BRC standard requires companies to comply with relevant food legislation.

Certified companies, in addition to strengthening customer trust, also gain the endorsement of the British Retail Consortium—considered a true "ticket to trade". Moreover, they benefit from reduced customer audits, as clients have direct access to all audit information through the certification body.
