ISO 14067

ISO 14067

ISO 14067: Specification with guidance for quantification of the carbon footprint of products.

What does it concerns?

The international standard ISO 14067 provides requirements and guidelines for quantifying greenhouse gas emissions at the product (and services) level. It provides a method consistent for the measurement, reporting and verification of the carbon footprint of products and services. It is applicable internationally to all goods and services (e.g. carbon footprint of buildings, events, etc.).

The standard facilitates the understanding of Organizations and Companies for the environmental impact of their products and services and identifying opportunities to take action to reduce their GHG emissions.

What is a product and service related greenhouse gas inventory?

Product Carbon Footprint of a Product (PCF) is an important method for the determination and evaluation of the quantity and distribution of operational emissions. The inventory takes into account all emissions during a product's life cycle, e.g. production, transportation (upstream and downstream), energy consumption during use, and the type of disposal or recycling.

ISO 14067 Verification – Quantification and reporting of product’s carbon footprint (CFP) with ISO 14067 standard

ISO 14067 addresses only a single impact category, i.e. climate change. Inside its’ scope are not included carbon offsetting and communication of the CFP or partial CFP information. It is a GHG emissions quantification standard and it does not assess any potential social, economic or other environmental aspects and impacts arising during the life cycle of a product.

ISO 14067 is consistent with international life cycle assessment (LCA) standards, i.e. ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

Benefits of verifying product emissions according to ISO 14067

The Standard enables organizations and companies to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their products and services throughout their life cycle. This helps in making more sustainable choices that reduce environmental impact.

A product-and services related greenhouse gas inventory, support organizations and companies, the State and the consumers to assess and compare the impact of products and services on the climate. It is a valuable tool that helps to raise awareness of climate change and to take targeted measures for reducing emissions.

The product-and services related greenhouse gas inventory verification add transparency and credibility to the sustainability efforts of the organizations and companies demonstrating to the interested parties that the product and services emissions are taken seriously. Not only the growing demands and expectations of various stakeholders are met but also the commitment to climate protection may also result to a clear competitive advantage.

Some additional benefits of the CFP verification are:

  • Calculating your carbon footprint – the first step toward implementing an emissions reduction and offsetting strategy
  • Better understanding of the product’ emissions profiles for the identification of “hotspots” and “weak points”
  • Verification results in solid Sustainability Reporting
  • Transparent greenhouse gas (GHG) quantification and reporting
  • Reliable and comparable parameters for organizations and consumers
  • Improved efficiency across the value chain, by taking measures to reduce emissions throughout the value chain
  • Supporting implementation of other standards, such as ISO 14001 (environmental management systems)
  • Consistency with other standards, such as ISO 14025 (environmental labels), ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, among others
  • Legal and other conformity (where applicable)
  • Customers’ loyalty and market demand, as consumers increasingly value sustainable products and services, building trust to the customers
  • Drive innovation as ISO 14067 facts, figures data after a detailed analysis and evaluation of environmental impact which can lead to the optimization and redesign of processes and use of more efficient technologies to reduce emissions, e.g. use of renewables, reduction of waste, etc.

Whom it conserns

The verification of Carbon footprint of products and services is suitable for all companies and organizations that want to quantify their environmental impact and use the output of their CFP calculations in their communication with the interested parties, i.e. products, services, buildings, events.
