Lifts and Lifting Equipment

Initial and Periodic Lifts Inspections

The inspection of a lift involves a detailed examination of the lift and all related equipment. The purpose of the inspection is to identify any defects that are or could be dangerous and to assess the effectiveness and functionality of all safety components to ensure user protection.

It is important not to confuse lifts inspections with preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance typically involves replacing worn or damaged parts, topping up oils, and making adjustments to minimize risks.

Lifts inspections examine the following:

  • Type of suspension,
  • Machine-engine,
  • Pulleys,
  • Cabin and counterweight guides,
  • Shaft and cabin door locks,
  • Safety gear,
  • Buffers,
  • Speed limiter,
  • Pump and piston,
  • Rupture valve

Lifts inspections/certifications by an independent and authorized organization became mandatory in Cyprus since 2004 and apply to all lifts installed in homes, offices, large private projects, public spaces, industrial facilities, ships, etc.

TÜV CYPRUS is a notified body (NB 2261) for the inspection and certification of lifts according to the European Directive 2014/33/EU, Standards EN81-20 and EN 81-50, and national legislation C.D.P 309/2016.

Additionally, TÜV CYPRUS is an Authorized Lift Inspector by the Department of Labor Inspection (DLI) for the Periodic Inspection of Lifts according to Regulations C.D.P. 533/2012 and the amending Regulations C.D.P 232/2023 which require every lift owner to ensure the Periodic Inspection of the machine at least once every 24 months.

Beyond mandatory lift inspections, TÜV CYPRUS undertakes:

  • Review of the study and selection of equipment based on the intended use of the lifts,
