TÜV NORD GROUP achieves ISO 42001 accreditation for AIMS: A milestone in international AI ambitions

With the increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI), the requirements for safety, transparency and reliable control of AI systems are growing. TÜV NORD is proud to have obtained both UKAS accreditation from the United Kingdom and RvA accreditation from the Netherlands for the ISO/IEC 42001 standard for Artificial Intelligence Management Systems (AIMS).

ISO/IEC 42001 is an international standard for management systems, especially for artificial intelligence. It supports companies and organisations in developing and operating artificial intelligence responsibly and securely. It considers ethical aspects as well as assessing risks and opportunities.

Under the watchful eye of the audit team and other directly involved parties, both accreditations were presented to the CEO of TÜV NORD AG, Dr. Dirk Stenkamp, on the 30th of January 2026. The official handover was done by Andrew Fletcher, Executive Director - Commercial on behalf of the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and by the chairman of the board of directors, Roeland Nieuweboer on behalf of the Raad voor Accreditatie (RvA) during a gathering at the TÜV NORD headquarter in Essen.

During this event, those present emphasised the importance of the safe application of AI within business processes. “Achieving ISO/IEC 42001 accreditation is a significant milestone in our mission to promote the safe and responsible application of AI technologies worldwide. TÜV NORD is committed to establishing and upholding the highest standards to enhance trust in AI systems. This accreditation underscores our role as a leader in international collaboration and as a reliable partner for businesses seeking to ensure their AI processes are secure and efficient", says TÜV NORD CEO Dirk Stenkamp.

RvA chairman of the board Roeland Nieuweboer: "That there is now a third party that can certify against the ISO 42001- Information Technology AI Management System is very valuable. Europe, we all know, faces a big challenge. With our knowledge economy, we can do much more in the Netherlands and in Europe in the field of Big Tech. The TIC sector in particular can be an enabler for technological progress and thus for increasing our prosperity and strengthening our resilience. With this accreditation, TÜV NORD underlines how important this is.”

The global harmonisation of legal frameworks for AI regulations is also a concern for UKAS: "In 2024, UKAS was a co-founder of the AIQI consortium which aims to bring together international quality infrastructure stakeholders to develop frameworks for the safe, secure, and ethical implementation of AI technologies. The pilot for ISO/IEC 42001 has been instrumental in reinforcing the role of accreditation in strengthening confidence in society. Congratulations to the TÜV NORD team for their achievement as one of the first to obtain UKAS accreditation for this standard," adds Andrew Fletcher on behalf of UKAS.

TÜV NORD will certify companies worldwide according to ISO/IEC 42001 in the future. "Our customers rely on our expertise, and the fact that we have obtained not one but two accreditations confirms this", says Wolfgang Wielputz, CEO of the Business Unit Certification within TÜV NORD. "We are proud of our collaboration with accreditation bodies such as DAkkS, UKAS and RvA and look forward to further expanding our expertise in the AI sector."
