Welding & Brazing Procedure Qualifications

Independent Third-Party Witnessing to EN ISO, ASME, PD 5500, EN 13445, AWS and More.

TÜV UK provides independent Third-Party Witnessing and Verification of Welding and Brazing Procedure Qualification Tests, across a wide range of materials, processes, and sectors. Operating under UKAS accreditation to ISO/IEC 17020, we are authorised to witness qualification tests for procedures used in structural fabrication, pressure equipment, piping, aerospace, transportable pressure equipment, and brazed assemblies.

Our engineers operate throughout the UK and Ireland, supporting manual, semi-automatic, mechanised, and fully automated welding and brazing procedure qualifications, either on-site or in-works.

What We Offer

  • Witnessing of Welding and Brazing Procedure Qualification Tests (WPQR/BPQR).
  • Support in confirming applicable standards, joint configurations, and essential variables.
  • Verification in accordance with EN ISO, ASME IX, PD 5500, EN 13445, AWS, NORSOK, and more.
  • Coordination of mechanical, metallurgical, and NDT testing via UKAS-accredited laboratories.
  • Certification issued by TÜV UK on successful qualification.
  • Applicable to manual, semi-automatic, mechanised, and automated process types.
  • Broad coverage across plate, pipe, vessel, and refrigeration systems, including dissimilar materials and overlays.

TÜV UK is a UKAS-accredited Type A Inspection Body, Approved Body, and Recognised Third Party Organisation (RTPO). All services are delivered impartially in accordance with international standards and UKAS requirements.

Applicable Standards We Witness

Welding Procedure Qualification (WPQR)

  • BS EN ISO 15614-1 to -13 – Procedure testing by process and material (arc, gas, laser, electron beam, friction, etc.)
  • BS EN ISO 15613 – Pre-production welding tests
  • BS EN 1090-2 / -3 – Structural steel and aluminium
  • ASME BPVC Section IX – Welding procedures for pressure equipment
  • ASME B31.1 / B31.3 – Power/process piping
  • PD 5500 – Unfired pressure vessels (UK code)
  • EN 13445 – Unfired pressure vessels (European code)
  • AWS B2.1 – Structural welding
  • ISO 24394 – Aerospace coordination requirements

Brazing Procedure Qualification (BPQR)

  • BS EN 13134 – Brazing procedure qualification
  • ASME Section IX – Brazing procedure tests
  • BS EN 14276 – Brazed refrigeration and heat exchanger systems
  • BS EN ISO 17672 – Brazing filler metal selection and compatibility

Types of Certification & Services

  • Welding Procedure Qualification Record (WPQR):
Formal record of the mechanical and metallurgical performance of a welding procedure, including:
    • Process type, joint configuration, material group, thickness range, and test results.
    • Applicable to manual, semi-auto, mechanised, and automated welding systems.
  • Brazing Procedure Qualification Record (BPQR):
Documentation of the successful qualification of a brazing procedure, including:
    • Base material, filler alloy, heating method (torch, induction, furnace, etc.), flux, joint clearance, and test results.
  • Welding Procedure Specification (WPS):
    A controlled shop-floor document specifying:
    • Joint design, process parameters, material, position.
    • Electrical parameters, consumables, preheat/interpass/PWHT.
  • Brazing Specification:
Includes filler metal, flux, heating source, temperature range, joint details, and inspection requirements.

TÜV UK witnesses and verifies that the procedure test complies with the selected standard. We do not approve procedures for design or suitability in service — that responsibility remains with the manufacturer or design authority.

How it Works

1. Initial Technical Review
We confirm applicable standards and variables: material group, joint type, position, process, and test requirements.

2. Procedure Test Witnessing
Carried out at your facility or external test centre. Applicable to:

  • Manual welding (e.g. MMA, TIG, MIG)
  • Semi-automatic (e.g. MAG with manual control)
  • Mechanised and fully automated welding (e.g. SAW, orbital, robotic MIG/MAG)
  • Torch, furnace, induction, and dip brazing

3. Testing & Evaluation
We coordinate required testing (visual, mechanical, metallurgical, NDT) with UKAS-accredited laboratories and validate results.

4. Certification Issued
A TÜV UK WPQR or BPQR is issued, clearly stating the standard, process, scope, and range of approval.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — provided the test setup meets both sets of essential variables and acceptance criteria, dual qualification is possible.

Yes — we verify procedures for manual, semi-automatic, mechanised, and automated processes. This includes robotic MIG/MAG, orbital TIG, submerged arc (SAW), and automated induction or furnace brazing.

Based on standard and application, testing may include:

Visual inspection

Tensile, bend, impact, or hardness tests

Macro/micro examination

NDT (RT, UT, PT, MT)

Pressure test (for brazed joints)

Yes — we can assist in the preparation or review of these documents to ensure they align with the approved procedure, while maintaining our impartiality.

Yes — TÜV UK Ltd is recognised for independent verification to both PD 5500 and EN 13445, in line with project and regulatory expectations.

No — we verify compliance with the standard. The suitability for service conditions is determined by the design authority or manufacturer.
