Independent verification of sustainability reporting according to GRI Standards

Organizations are increasingly required to disclose their sustainability performance in a structured and transparent manner. Sustainability reports prepared in line with the GRI Standards (Global Reporting Initiative) provide a recognized framework for communicating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) information.

TÜV NORD Middle East performs independent verification of sustainability reports to confirm the accuracy, completeness, and reliability of the disclosed data. The verification process assesses whether reported information is aligned with the requirements of the GRI Standards and reflects actual organizational performance.

This service is closely linked to internationally recognized frameworks, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Relevance for international organizations

Independent verification ensures that sustainability information is credible, comparable, and suitable for international business environments. For companies operating across multiple regions, including the GCC and Middle East, verified sustainability reporting supports:

  • Harmonized ESG communication across markets
  • Increased transparency towards stakeholders and regulators
  • Improved positioning in sustainability and ESG evaluations
  • Alignment with global reporting frameworks

How We Support Your Sustainability Reporting

TÜV NORD Middle East provides independent verification of sustainability reports in accordance with GRI Standards. Organizations seeking to validate their ESG disclosures and strengthen the reliability of their sustainability reporting can initiate the verification process through TÜV NORD.

Materiality and stakeholder-oriented reporting

The GRI framework emphasizes the identification of material topics—issues that significantly influence both organizational performance and stakeholder decision-making.

Organizations are required to:

  • Conduct structured stakeholder engagement processes
  • Identify relevant sustainability topics based on impact and importance
  • Report performance indicators that reflect these material topics
  • Ensure transparency of methodology and data sources

Verification by TÜV NORD evaluates whether this materiality process has been defined and applied in accordance with GRI requirements, and whether reported indicators are consistent with identified priorities.

Verification levels according to GRI Standards

Sustainability reports prepared under the GRI Standards can follow different implementation levels. External verification confirms the declared level based on the completeness and depth of reported information.

Core level

  • Documentation of the materiality assessment process
  • Reporting of at least one indicator per identified material topic

Comprehensive level

  • Full disclosure of all relevant material topics
  • Reporting of all applicable indicators associated with each topic

TÜV NORD verifies whether the report aligns with the selected level and whether the required disclosures have been properly addressed.

I. Verification of the level of sustainability reporting

The assessment of the sustainability report level is based on:

  • The GRI Content Index
  • The organization’s declaration of the applied reporting level
  • Submitted documentation and supporting evidence

Auditors from TÜV NORD review the provided data to determine whether the report meets the requirements for Core or Comprehensive application levels.

II. Verification of material topics and report content

Organizations may also choose to verify specific sections or indicators within their sustainability reports.

In this case:

  • The organization defines the scope of verification (selected material topics)
  • Relevant documentation for these topics is submitted
  • TÜV NORD evaluates the accuracy and consistency of reported indicators
  • Identified findings are documented and communicated

All results are summarized in a formal verification report.

Verification output and certification

Upon successful completion of the verification process, TÜV NORD issues:

  • A verification statement confirming the assessed reporting level and/or indicators
  • A formal verification report documenting the audit results

This independent confirmation strengthens the credibility and transparency of sustainability reporting in international markets, including the Middle East and GCC region

Methodological framework and standards

Verification activities are conducted in accordance with:

  • GRI Standards
  • AA1000AS (AccountAbility Assurance Standard)

TÜV NORD applies recognized assurance methodologies to evaluate sustainability disclosures and ensure that reported data meets established criteria for accountability and transparency.

Verification and certification activities are performed independently and remain strictly separated from consulting services.
