ISO 22000

Food manufacturers and packaging producers operate in an environment where product quality and food safety are equally critical. ISO 22000 establishes a globally applicable framework for food safety management that addresses risks across the entire food chain — from primary production to final delivery.

ISO 22000: Comprehensive Food Safety Management Systems

The standard supports organizations in systematically identifying, evaluating and controlling food safety hazards. By combining management system principles with food safety-specific requirements, ISO 22000 enables structured and transparent control of processes that affect consumer safety. Its international recognition makes the standard particularly relevant for companies active in export-oriented markets, including the Middle East and GCC region.

A key characteristic of ISO 22000 is its flexibility. Organizations can design a food safety management system that reflects their specific operational context while meeting all normative requirements. Certification confirms that the system complies with the standard’s defined criteria.

Target Group

ISO 22000 is applicable to organizations at all stages of the food supply chain, including:

  • Food manufacturers
  • Producers of food contact and packaging materials
  • Organizations involved in processing, storage or distribution of food

The standard is suitable for companies seeking a structured, internationally accepted food safety management system that can be independently audited and certified.

Key Benefits of ISO 22000

Implementing and certifying a food safety management system in accordance with ISO 22000 offers organizations a range of operational and market-related advantages:

  • Structured management system supporting compliance with food safety and health regulations
  • Food safety management tailored to the organization’s processes and risk profile
  • Internationally recognised ISO certification, relevant for global supply chains and export markets
  • Integration of Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) principles into a systematic framework
  • Reduction of duplicate or customer-specific audits through recognised certification
  • Lower exposure to product liability risks through defined controls and responsibilities
  • Clear positioning as a reliable supplier of safe food or food packaging materials
  • Increased transparency for customers and other interested parties
  • Compatibility with other ISO-based management systems, such as quality management or environmental management

Climate Change Considerations in Management System Standards

In February 2022, the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) issued a joint communiqué addressing the inclusion of climate change considerations within existing ISO management system standards.

As a result, Clauses 4.1 and 4.2 of the relevant management system standards require organizations to consider climate change-related issues when evaluating their internal and external context and the needs and expectations of interested parties. These considerations are assessed alongside other factors that may influence the effectiveness of the management system.

For ISO 22000, this means that climate-related aspects are taken into account within the established management system structure, without altering the core food safety requirements of the standard.
