Functional Safety Engineer (FSE)

The Safety Instrumented System (SIS) course is part of the Functional Safety program and is crucial for professionals working in industries where safety is a critical concern, such as chemical, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, power, and food processing. Safety Instrumented Systems are designed to prevent or mitigate hazardous events by automatically acting when predefined conditions are met, ensuring that the risk of an accident or dangerous occurrence is minimized.

By completing this course, participants will gain the necessary expertise to apply industry standards and best practices in the design, operation, and maintenance of SIS in compliance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511.

The objective of this training course is to train the attendees in the fundamental principles of functional safety PH/RA as it relates to safety-instrumented systems and to get their competency in the functional safety standards.

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Interpret and apply the principles of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards for functional safety in the design, operation, and verification of SIS.
• Understand how to design, implement, and manage safety instrumented systems to meet the required safety integrity levels (SIL).
• Conduct SIL assessments and calculations for SIS to ensure the system meets the required safety performance.
• Evaluate and verify the performance of SIS through testing and auditing techniques to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
• Use methods like HAZOP, LOPA, and FMEA to identify risks and design appropriate SIS responses to mitigate hazards.
• Understand the lifecycle of SIS, from concept through operation to decommissioning, ensuring functional safety is maintained throughout.
• Integrate SIS into broader process safety management systems, ensuring continuous improvement and regulatory compliance.
