ISO 9001:2026 strengthens the strategic role of quality management systems while maintaining the familiar structure and principles of ISO 9001. The revision responds to evolving business challenges, increased stakeholder expectations and the need for organisations to build a stronger quality culture, enhance resilience and manage change more effectively.
The revised standard introduces new requirements related to quality culture and ethical behaviour. Leadership is expected to play a more active role in promoting behaviours and values that support sustained quality performance throughout the organisation
Clause 6.1 has been restructured to provide a clearer distinction between risks and opportunities. Organisations are expected to take a more systematic approach to identifying, evaluating and addressing both elements within their quality management system.
ISO 9001:2026 places greater emphasis on planning and managing changes to the quality management system. Communication, monitoring, evaluation and review activities are expected to be integrated into change planning processes.
Previously introduced climate change amendments have now been fully integrated into the standard through Clauses 4.1 and 4.2, reinforcing the need to consider relevant climate-related issues and stakeholder expectations when determining the context of the organisation.
The requirements relating to organisational knowledge have been broadened, recognising the importance of knowledge management in achieving the intended results of the quality management system.
The revision incorporates updated terminology from ISO's Harmonised Structure and ISO 9000:2026. In addition, Annex A has been expanded to provide further clarification across the standard's requirements.
