Carbon Neutral Company

Certification as “Carbon Neutral Company”

Environmental disasters as a result of global warming are a threat to people and the natural world and lead to unforeseeable consequences. Climate change is considered to be the most important challenge of the 21st century. Companies are under increasing pressure to take voluntary measures to combat global warming over and above their basic legal obligations. This is where certification as a “Carbon Neutral Company” by TÜV NORD comes in: companies can have their carbon footprint checked, demonstrate the sustainability of their operations through an audit and document success with a carbon neutral seal of quality.

Certification is based on TÜV NORD Standard TN-CC 010, which is a result of the extensive experience of TÜV NORD in the area of national and international climate protection. The procedure includes verification of the company carbon footprint and examination of carbon neutrality, where the GHG (Green House Gas) emissions verified are offset by CO2 certificates from climate protection projects.

Target groups for certification

Voluntary certification according to the TÜV NORD standard is directed towards companies who involve themselves actively in matters relating to climate change and its consequences, reduce their CO2 emissions and wish to demonstrate this to the outside world.

Benefits of certification

Certified companies receive confirmation from a competent and neutral organisation that they have recognised the importance of climate change, have drawn the correct conclusions and are following a path in which they take responsibility. Successful certification also leads to numerous positive effects on corporate image and can significantly raise market value. The test mark appeals to customers who wish to purchase more environmentally compatible products; increasingly, consumers want to play their part and lessen the effects of climate change by directing their purchasing power towards carbon neutral companies. When companies are directly compared with one another, lower CO2 emissions help to increase sales. Monitoring of emission sources can also reveal potential for energy and other savings and therefore contribute to general cost reduction.

Prerequisites for certification

The prerequisite for certification is creation of a CO2 footprint of the company in accordance with the requirements of the TÜV NORD standard; this can be performed by the company itself or by a consultant. Valid CO2 certificates should also be available in order to compensate for the CO2 emissions which have been calculated for the company.
