ISO 14001:2026 Sharpening the focus on climate action

With its latest amendment, ISO 14001 is sharpening its focus on sustainability.

In the updated version of the standard for environmental management systems (EMS), not only is climate protection firmly anchored, but companies must also address topics such as biodiversity and natural resources. But what does this mean for organizations?

  • Context Analysis: Organizations must actively determine whether climate change, biodiversity, or natural resources are relevant factors for their management system.
  • Life Cycle Perspective: The requirement to consider the life cycle of products is now more prominent. Organizations are expected to look beyond their own operational boundaries and systematically assess and influence the environmental impacts of their products.
  • Stakeholder Focus: Requirements and expectations from customers, authorities, and other stakeholders regarding climate action and other environmental factors must be systematically identified.

If you are already ISO 14001 certified, no significant efforts are likely needed. With an additional analysis of the environmental aspects mentioned in the updated ISO 14001, this represents just one more step on the path toward responsible climate action.
