This provides essential background knowledge and practical instruction for those required to move and handle people at work including within the health and care sectors.

Aim

To ensure delegates have an awareness of both the theory and practical areas surrounding safe manual handling which includes the safe handling of people.

  • Individuals required to move and handle people as part of their work.
  • Managers and supervisors of those with people handling responsibilities.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of the course candidates should have awareness of:

  • Definition and significance of manual handling
  • Law related to manual handling, employees and employers responsibilities
  • Anatomy of the spine
  • Good posture, body mechanics and causes of back pain
  • Need for risk assessment
  • Principles of safe lifting
  • Improving manual handling practice including with people handling
  • How to use manual handling equipment safely and correctly
  • How to correctly use a hoist for safe lifting
  • Unsafe manual handling practices
  • Emergency lifting (theory only)
  • Problem solving with Manual Handling
  • Good back care.

Content:

This course covers theory, practical sessions and also reflective practice; this recaps on prior knowledge using a Q&A sheet, a quiz, questions and discussion on manual handling in the workplace, problem solving scenarios, good back care exercise sheet and handouts covering theory. A list of reference materials is provided.

Assessment and Certification

Candidates who attend and successfully complete the course will be awarded a certificate of attendance.
