Product SIL Certification

What is Product SIL Certification?

SIL Certification can be provided to all the electrical, electronic and programmable electronic products or components which are intended to be used into one or more safety functions.

Each SIL level represents the extent of risk reduction required to maintain acceptable rate of failure.

SIL Level

Risk Reduction Factor

Applicable industry

4

100000 to 10000

Space and Nuclear

3

10000 to 1000

Oil and Gas

2

1000 to 100

Chemical and Process

1

100 to 10

Other hazardous industries

The IEC 61508 standard describes the requirements of electrical, electronic and programmable electronic devices intended to be used in Safety function.

Table 1 Probability of failure on demand for each SIL

Safety Integrity Level (SIL)

Average Probability of Failure on Demand (PFD)

SIL 4

10-5  ≤ PFD  < 10-4

SIL 3

10-4  ≤ PFD  < 10-3

SIL 2

10-3  ≤ PFD  < 10-2

SIL 1

10-2  ≤ PFD  < 10-1

Why to consider SIL Certification for your products?

  • SIL certification is mandatory contractual requirement in many tenders for important supplies, for PSU’s in India as well as in international export for both mechanical products / systems and for electrical / electronic /programmable electronic products.
  • Compliance to the requirements for SIL Certification also streamlines your Product Development and Quality Management System processes.
  • SIL certificate underlines reliability of your products.
  • SIL certification provides recognition and brand value to your product

How TUV India can help?

TÜV INDIA helps manufacturers to fulfil these requirements and to further increase the safety of their products. TÜV INDIA provides support for the certification of safety-relevant products in the area of electrical/ electronic/programmable electronic systems (E/E/PE systems), offering the following services.

System assessment

  • Review of specifications and safety requirements
  • Concept and design analyses
  • Verification and validation

Assessment of software and tools

  • Testing of development and other tools and communication protocols
  • Architecture analyses

Assessment of hardware

  • Probabilistic analyses
  • Failure effect analyses

Certification

  • Certification of components and systems

Activities for SIL certification generally include

  • Performance of fault tree analyses (FTA) and failure mode and effect analyses (FMEA/ FMEDA),
  • Determination of safety-related parameters within the framework of IEC 61508 and IEC 61511, such as PFDavg, HFT, CCF, SFF, λSU, λDU, λDD, λSD.
  • Verification of functional safety in accordance with IEC 61508, IEC 61511, IEC 62061; Safety Integrity Level-SIL ISO 13849-1: Performance Level.
  • Assessment of documentation for management of functional safety and design & development life cycle.

Standards to be followed -

  • IEC 61508-1:2010 : General requirements
  • IEC 61508-2:2010 : Requirements for Electrical /Electronic/Programmable Electronic (E/E/PE) safety-related systems
