FSSAI released a notice stating that import of foods for special medical purposes (i.e. food for inborn errors of metabolism and hypoallergenic conditions) will be allowed for 6 months between 02/05/2020 to 01/11/2020 or until the standards for same are defined and notified.

Food Testing Essential in times of COVID-19 (28/04/2020):

FSSAI has issued an order stating that all NABL accredited food testing laboratories fall under essential services in times of COVID-19. It was observed that many laboratories are facing difficulties in getting the E-Pass and to solve this FSSAI has released a list of designated FSSAI officers state wise who can support laboratories and food industries in getting the required permission from local authorities to continue services to ensure supply of safe food.

European Food Safety Authority releases its first Cumulative Risk Assessment Reports on Pesticides (29/04/2020):

EFSA has published the results of its two pilot assessments on the risks posed to humans by residues of multiple pesticides in food. The assessments – one considering chronic effects on the thyroid system and the other acute effects on the nervous system – are the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between EFSA and the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM).

FDA Issues Temporary Policy for Certain Requirements under the Accredited Third-Party Certification Program During COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (22/04/2020):

The US FDA is issuing a guidance on temporary policy regarding certain requirements under the FDA (FSMA) Accredited Third-Party Certification Program for foreign food entities and their products which will address the current challenges with conducting onsite monitoring activities during the COVID-19 by providing temporary flexibility so that recognized accreditation bodies (ABs) can maintain the accreditations of certification bodies (CBs), and already-issued certifications need not lapse, where certain safeguards are in place.
