FSSAI releases directions regarding declaration of “Date of manufacturing” and “Best before date” for sweets (21/05/2020):

FSSAI had previously released a detailed directive on declaring “date of manufacture” and “best before date” for all non-packaged/ loose sweets wherein all parties were asked to declare the above information on containers/trays at shops. With respect to the ongoing COVID-19 global pandemic, FSSAI has further extended the enforcement date from 1st June, 2020 to 1st August, 2020.

Launch of Food Safety And Compliance System (FoSCoS) and modification of license by existing licensed manufacturers (28/05/2020):

FSSAI has launched a new cloud based online food safety and compliance system called FoSCoS which will replace the existing food licensing and registration system (FLRS). All manufactures both new and existing will have to get their license modified by the new system. The new system provides a one stop solution for all license and compliance requirements with services like food category system mapped into the new license system which will allow manufacturers to categorize their products as per FSSAI food category upon registration itself.

Import of Golden syrup/Invert sugar syrup and Rice syrup (30/05/2020):

It has been bought to the notice of FSSAI that products like golden syrup/invert sugar syrup/ rice syrup are being used to adulterate honey as they exhibit similar product qualities and are easily available. Thus, to avoid further adulteration of honey, FSSAI directs all importers/food business operators of golden syrup/invert sugar syrup/rice syrup to submit the required documents prior to clearance to concerned authorized officer with clear details on end use of these products before allowing the sale or transport of same.

FDA provides temporary flexibility for labelling of certain human foods (22/05/2020):

FDA announced a temporary flexibility for labelling of certain requirements due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Examples include substitution of certain oils may temporarily be appropriate without a label change, such as canola oil for sunflower oil, because they contain similar types of fats. The FDA is providing temporary flexibility to the vending machine industry and will not object if covered operators do not meet vending machine labeling requirements to provide calorie information for foods sold by vending machines.

World Food Safety Day with CODEX (29/05/2020):

FAO and WHO will hold a joint virtual celebration – a Facebook live event – hosted by WHO Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland on the afternoon of Friday 5 June 2020. The event will give food business stakeholders a chance to interact with two food safety experts, from WHO and the Codex Alimentarius Secretariat and get updated on latest world food safety requirements.
