GS Marking

Since 1977 the GS mark for “Tested Safety” has been the only mark in Europe testifying to voluntary compliance with product safety as regulated by law. The GS mark is based on the German Product and Equipment Safety Act (GPSG). A product bearing the GS mark and the TÜV NORD logo fulfils the requirements of the GPSG. It has been tested for safety and cannot put the user at risk either when used correctly for the intended purpose or when used incorrectly in a way which is foreseeable.

Manufacturers and importers of technical work equipment and articles for daily use can apply, for example, for the GS mark in relation to the following products: leisure, household and garden equipment, lamps, IT and office equipment, laboratory equipment, furniture, toys, entertainment electronics and tools. TÜV NORD performs the voluntary safety testing and certification of the relevant products.

“Tested Safety” is known and recognized as a sign of quality and safety in Europe and in many other countries throughout the world. It signals to the purchaser that the product selected – including the operating instructions – has been inspected and approved by an independent body. Use of the mark underlines the trustworthiness of product information and advertising statements. This results in an advantage in the market- place when competing with non-certified products – products with the GS mark are preferred. Certification also makes an important contribution to the reduction of product liability risk.
