BRCGS Standard for Packaging Materials

New Standards, New Opportunities: Version 7 of the BRCGS Standard for Packaging Materials

Starting April 28, 2025, Version 7 of the BRCGS Standard for Packaging Materials will come into effect. These updates introduce not only new requirements but also numerous opportunities for companies to enhance their product safety and sustainability practices. This article highlights the key changes and their significance for the industry.

An Expanded Scope

With Version 7, the focus of the standard extends beyond the food and beverage industry. Packaging for hygienically sensitive consumer goods such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and single-use items now falls under the requirements. This expansion highlights the growing importance of comprehensive product safety management.

New Opportunities Through Audit Changes

The introduction of blended audits (a combination of remote document review and on-site auditing) enhances flexibility. Additionally, unannounced audits remain voluntary but continue to offer significant benefits. The maximum tenure for consecutive audits by a single auditor is now limited to five years.

New and Enhanced Requirements

  • Product Safety Culture

Product safety culture is a central focus of the new version. Companies must establish clear strategies to implement and audit a robust safety culture, embedding safety awareness into daily operations.

  • Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment (HARA)

The hazard and risk analysis requirements have been revised to align with the Codex Alimentarius. Clearly defined sections make implementation more structured and accessible.

  • Allergen Management

Version 7 introduces comprehensive allergen risk assessment requirements. Companies must implement appropriate controls and ensure staff training to proactively minimize risks.

  • Outsourcing Management

Processes outsourced to external providers must be tightly controlled. Safety measures must be integrated into the HARA plan and documented within service specifications.

Preparing for the New Requirements

  • Training and Documentation

BRCGS training courses and detailed guidance materials will be available starting January 6, 2025. These resources will help companies and auditors effectively transition to the new requirements.

  • Practical Tools

The BRCGS website offers practical tools such as checklists, audit templates, and guidance documents to streamline implementation.

  • Proactive Planning

Now is the time to review your processes and make necessary adjustments. A structured approach ensures your company meets all requirements by April 2025.
