Energy Chemistry Laboratory

The laboratory carries out complex chemical and physical analyses of liquid and solid fuels, solid biofules and alternative fuels, oils, inherent ashes, energy and surface waters.

Analyses of solid fuels, solid biofuels and alternative fuels, inherent ash and combustible wastes:

• i.e. coal and lignite, pellets and briquettes from biomass and free biomass, combustible wastes and ash are being carried out completely,

• i.e. to its full extent required by the standard.  

It includes:

• determination of water content,

• determination of ash content,

• determination of volatile and non-volatile combustibles,

• determination of combustible heat and calorific value,

• determination of the entire sulphur value and ash sulphur,

• chemical analysis of ash,

• determination of grindability by the Hardgrove and VTI method,

• determination of unburned residues,

• granulometric analysis,

• determination of pellet wear,

• determination of bulk density,

• determination of real density,

• determination of dimensions of pellets and briquettes.


Long-term experience with analyses of solid biofuels (biomass) enables us to carry out complex analyses and sampling (not within F1) at the manufacturer´s site. The results of these tests are important information for the structural designs of energy equipment, in particular, boilers, heat exchangers and coal milling equipment, for the selection of suitable fuel from the fuel suppliers, for the optimization of the combustion regime, for the operation of desulphurisation and denitrification equipment. Beyond the scope of accreditation, the Testing Laboratories issue the Certificate of fuel quality on the basis of the tests carried out by our laboratory. The accredited test protocol is attached to this Certificate. TÜV NORD Czech, s.r.o., Certification Body No. 3170, accredited by the Czech Accreditation Institute / ČIA o.p.s. according to ČSN EN 45011:1998 performs the certification of solid fuels and solid biofuels. The accredited certificate is issued on the basis of the conformity of the physical and chemical properties with the requirements of the standard document, Decree No. 482/2005 Coll. as amended and Decree No. 13/2009. The Testing Laboratories, the Accredited Testing Laboratory No. 1060 carries out tests including sampling.

Tests of liquid fuels and lubricants

provide information on qualitative indicators of these products and their useful properties. They are carried out within the following scope:

• determination of water content,

• determination of ash content,

• determination of hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen content,

• determination of sulphur,

• determination of combustible heat and calorific value,

• determination of carbon residue by the Conradson method,

• determination of mechanical impurities,

• determination of density,

• determination of kinematic viscosity,

• determination of the acid number,

• determination of the freezing point (non-accredited test),

• determination of asphaltenes (non-accredited test).


Tests of energy and surface waters

are used to check the chemical regime of a circuit of water vapour (feed water, boiler water, steam and condensate) and to minimize the corrosion of materials caused by water and flue gas. We also carry out chemical removal of corrosive fumes from iron and steel, i.e. check of boiler cleaning. Water tests are carried out within the following scope:

• determination of electrical conductivity,

• determination of pH,

• determination of acid neutralising capacity,

• determination of the sum of calcium and magnesium,

• determination of silicon dioxide,

• determination of phosphorus pentoxide,

• determination of ammonium ions,

• determination of iron,

• determination of sodium.
