Guide: Journeys with non-licensed vehicles
Without licensing, you are quickly deregistered
You have a de-registered car and would like to re-register it? But how do you get to the registration office? Those believing they can just drive there are on the wrong path. Make sure you arrive safely.
- With a license plate:
You cannot drive a non-registered vehicle on public roads. But you can piggy-back it to the registration office. Use a suitable vehicle transporter or a trailer. - With temporary license plates:
Request temporary license plates from the road traffic licensing department. You will require your ID and an insurance cover note for this. You will receive a blank registration document to which you must then add the vehicle data. The temporary license plates are valid for no more than five days and do not need to be returned. - With red license plates:
Reliable car dealerships and workshops have red license plates that you can use when driving the car. Ask whether your workshop will provide you with these red license plates for driving to the registration office. - With invalidated license plates:
If your provisionally de-registered vehicle still has invalidated license plates, you can drive it directly to the registration office and the main inspection and emissions inspection. Single limitation: The registration office must be in the same or neighbouring registration area. However, you must ensure that these trips are covered by automobile liability insurance.
TÜV NORD expert tip:
In the latter case, you do not have to inform the registration office in advance. But ensure that the insurance cover is not only valid from the registration date.
