Start of the motorcycle season

Tips for bikers

Start of the motorcycle season

The first rays of sun are calling many bikers out onto the road again. But after several months' rest, it may not only be the bike that is rusty - the rider may be rusty as well. So besides a thorough safety check of the bike, you should also take a critical look at yourself and your driving skills.

Motorcycle check
Test the lights, brake lights, indicators and horn. Is the killer switch working?
All levers and switches should function smoothly and easily. Also check the tension and lubrication of the chain. What about the fluid levels and the tyre pressure? The tyres will have lost air because the bike has stood idle for so long. While checking the pressure, also inspect the tyres for possible damage and cracks in the rubber.

Fit for the first ride of the year?
Even if the bike is in good condition, it does not necessarily mean that the rider is fit. Riding a motorbike also involves physical challenges, and so everyone who has put on a bit of "winter weight" should check their fitness level. It may sound strange, but even a few physical exercises before starting out have never done anyone any harm.

Be well dressed - and on your guard
The risk of accidents in the first weeks of spring is particularly high. Under normal circumstances, every 50th vehicle on German roads is a motorbike - but on spring weekends it is every third! Car and motorcycle drivers first have to get used to each other again. Be particularly careful at crossroads, T-junctions and when turning left, or in countries where traffic drives on the left, when turning right. Even if you know the road well, frost damage may have led to potholes over the winter. Every time you ride, be sure to wear a helmet, gloves, leather trousers and jacket and boots - full protective clothing reduces the risk of injury by 50 per cent if an accident should occur!
