The Validation Suite Approach to Safety Qualification of Tools
In the automotive industry model-based software development of function code is often the technique of choice. This allows higher software quality and more efficient processes than classical development (hand-coded software).
The common standards of functional safety, such as IEC 61508, but also the future standards such, such as ISO 26262 for the automotive industry, require a qualification of development tools. Thus, for the development of safety-relevant software, the applied tools need to be qualified in general.
Tool validation can take place by validation of the chosen tool (after a principal suitability test) for the specific intended purpose in the specific project. This includes tests of correct functioning of the tool for the chosen properties (such as certain code generation options). An efficient way of reaching a validation statement for various projects and tool settings, is a validation by the means of a validation suite that is as far as possible automated, similar as known from a compiler development.
Existing standards do not give concrete requirements for the validation of development tools or for a validation suite. Thus TÜV NORD IFM and BMW together deduced and defined requirements based on the existing standards. These requirements were already used in practice for tool qualification.
