Digital monitoring units – information in a brief overview
A digital EC monitoring unit is required
A host of commercial, towing, and vehicles for passenger transport have been driving with a digital EC monitoring unit according to the EC commission specifications since 2006. You can quickly find out precisely which vehicles can be retrofitted. To ensure the safety of the passengers and the accompanying traffic, driving patterns must be examined. The digital units operate much more exact that the good old tachograph and store data considerably longer. The following vehicles must now be equipped with the digital EC monitoring unit:
- for a permissible total weight or more than 3.5 tons
- Tractors with tractor-trailer combinations whose total permissible weight is more than 3.5 tons
- Passenger traffic vehicles with more than eight passenger seats
Motor vehicles, with an initial registration as of January 1, 1996, for passenger traffic with a total weight of more than 10 tons and more than eight passenger seats as well as motor vehicles for transporting goods with a total weight of more than 12 tons must be retrofitted with a digital monitoring unit if the old monitoring unit must be replaced. If the signals on an old device are electrically transmitted, it may only be replaced with a digital monitoring unit: regardless of the date of the vehicle's initial registration
We have prepared a PDF that contains all the vehicles that are not affected by this regulation and is located on the right under download.
The digital EC monitoring unit saves lives and protects against overexertion
The everyday working life of coach and lorry drivers is stressful and full of responsibility: the increasing volume of traffic and the stressful job entails numerous risks. The digital EC monitoring unit facilitates compliance with the social legislation through the electronic recording of driving and rest times. It is installed on the vehicles dashboard and records the driving time, speed, and distance. The driver's activities are automatically recorded on a personal chip card and this information is archived for at least one year. Each driver in the EU receives only one chip card.
You can also obtain additional information on the digital monitoring units at the Federal Freight Road Transport.
