Chip-tuning guide
Chip, Chip, hooray
Do you want more engine performance, more speed and more torque? This is possible via chip-tuning or by re-programming the original chip. But it is not always recommended. First of all, you will consume more fuel. Secondly, the engine might suffer. And, under certain circumstance, it may void the operating permit of your vehicle.
Keep an eye on your car's heart
What can the engine endure? How much performance can I get out of it? Chip-tuning uses reserves that engine has been given for a longer mobile life and increased reliability under adverse circumstances. Observe the following points:
- Please have your chip-tuning measures tested and recorded in the vehicle documents.
- Caution! After the chip-tuning, the exhaust and noise will often be worse than before. In this case, legislators will remove your vehicle from the road (§ 19 para. 2 of the StVZO).
- Our tip: Only perform chip-tuning with a vehicle part approval or a general operating permit for vehicle parts (ABE).
Relieve the strain on your wallet
If you do not have a vehicle part approval or ABE, our experts must perform a costly individual acceptance inspection. And it is often very expensive:
- Exhaust gas measurement as per the regulations in EC directive 70/220/EEC
- Vehicle noise measurement as per the regulations in EC directive 70/157/EEC
- Engine performance measurement as per EC directive 80/1269/EEC
- Maximum speed measurement as per ECE regulation no. 68
- Possible checking of the braking effect and the tires at the increased maximum speed.
TÜV NORD expert tip
If performing chip-tuning, only do it with a vehicle part approval or ABE! The documents should contain the following information: Your vehicle is suitable for conversion. Your vehicle conforms to the emission limits for exhaust and noise.
