TÜV NORD certifies drive batteries for electric vehicles
Essen/Saarbrücken: Starting immediately, TÜV NORD will perform the technical inspection and certification of drive batteries jointly with CETECOM. Following the development of the first functioning system for the testing of lithium-ion batteries at the beginning of this year, TÜV NORD is now the first provider to develop a certification programme for the safety of drive batteries. All the tests that are necessary for the certification will be performed and evaluated in the test lab of cooperation partner CETECOM.
For hybrid vehicles or vehicles driven by electric power alone, lithium-ion batteries are the preferred choice, as they offer the highest energy density of all the secondary cells that are available at the present time. However, if a fault occurs, this high energy density can also mean danger. The proven safety of lithium-ion cells is therefore of central importance when it comes to their use in electric vehicles. In the last analysis, it is this safety factor which will help to make this new form of mobility acceptable to a wider public.
"Our overriding aim is to ensure that the route to electromobility is a safe one. This applies to all areas, but naturally in particular to the heart of the electric drivetrain, the battery. It must be guaranteed that batteries are safe. In addition, we are contributing our know-how to developing lithium-ion batteries still further and markedly increasing their energy density. Our working agreement with CETECOM provides the best basis for this", explains Axel Richter, responsible for electric vehicles at TÜV NORD.
The test equipment developed by TÜV NORD and CETECOM and also the test procedures for the drive batteries comply with unified standards, which means that the results are reproducible throughout the world. Certification by TÜV NORD enables manufacturers to provide proof of an independent inspection process in accordance with the latest state of technology. "Our extremely modern laboratory and test equipment are subject to continuous further development, and we cover the entire range of tests and inspections. These include tests of functional and electrical safety as well as of electromagnetic compatibility and resistance to environmental factors. This means that we fulfil industry requirements and at the same time are driving forward with a high global standard with regard to battery safety", explains the Managing Director of CETECOM, Gerhard Schirra. The partnership between our two expert organisation means that TÜV NORD (www.tuev-nord.de) and CETECOM (www.cetecom.com) together provide an independent test and certification provider in all areas of electromobility.
