Measurement of the combustion chamber temperature as laid down in §4 of the 17th Federal Immission Control Ordinance
To protect the environment, polluted air being emitted from waste incineration or co-incineration systems subject to licensing may not be allowed to have a negative environmental impact.
Legislators have thus defined requirements for operators relating to emissions but also relating to firing such as the retention time, temperature or mixture. The incineration process should be as complete as possible. Minimum temperatures and minimum retention time apply for the combustion chamber. Depending on the type of waste, when it is evenly mixed, the combustion chamber must reach 850 °C or even 1,100 °C, even when conditions are unfavourable. The minimum temperature is measured at a representative point in the combustion chamber or post combustion chamber to be specified by the authorities responsible. The combustion chamber and retention time must be measured at least once when the facility is started, and evidence must be provided that conditions have been met.
