Calibration of automatic measurement systems for continuous emission measurement
Operators of large firing installations or systems for waste incineration or waste co-incineration have to observe European standards which helps standardise emission monitoring in practice. Starting at specified dimensions, automatic measurement systems (AMS) must be used for continuous emissions measurement. For quality assurance, the standards stipulate which properties automatic measurement systems have to have and how they need to be installed, calibrated and maintained.
Which services do we offer?
- Working together with the approval authorities responsible, we define which operating conditions a calibration is necessary for.
- We conduct functional tests and calibration comparison measurements in accordance with the Federal Imission Control Act and various Federal Imission Control Ordinances.
- We identify the calibration function.
Calibration occurs before a functional test. Then 15 comparison measurements between the automatic measurement system to be calibrated and the standard reference measurement process are carried out within the framework of the calibration experiment. The measurements must be distributed evenly across at least three days and evenly across each day of measurement. The data acquired is used to determine the calibration function and the measurement inaccuracy of the AMS.
For automatic dust measurement systems, the number of measurements can be reduced with the consent of the public authority responsible. For unique and distinguishable operating conditions, it may be necessary to carry out separate calibrations, e.g. if they are not part of normal operation.
To reiterate: In Germany, calibration has to be carried out for all systems subject to licensing every 3 years or within six months after a significant change in the operating conditions or following a significant change in the measurement system.
The calibration function is valid for the respective system in a limited range. The system operator has to check compliance with this range on a weekly basis. We are a partner you can depend on when it comes to quality assurance and dealing with the public authorities.
What sets us apart?
We are a recognised measurement centre in accordance with §§ 26, 28 of the Federal Imission Control Act (BImSchG) in the areas of C (inorganic gases), F (dust) and L (organic-chemical compounds) for Groups II, III and IV (inspection of the installation and the function as well as the calibration of emission measurement systems in continuous operation).
Which standards and statutory regulations form the basis of our work?
- DIN EN 14181 (stationary source emissions – quality assurance of automated measurement systems)
- DIN EN 13284-2 (stationary source emissions - determination of low range mass concentration of dust, automated measurement systems)
- 17th Federal Imission Control Ordinance (Ordinance on Waste Incineration and Co-Incineration)
- 13th Federal Imission Control Ordinance (Ordinance on Large Firing Installations)
