Hazardous goods driver
Training of hazardous goods drivers
Approximately 350 million tons of hazardous goods are transported every year on German roads. It is understandable that this branch of transportation is regulated by a large number of laws and ordinances.
Special emphasis is put on the training and further education of the drivers who have to safely transport the hazardous goods from A to B. Drivers of vehicles that require markings (orange warning panels), must be in possession of a valid training appraisal. This is prescribed by the European accord on the international transport of hazardous goods on roads (ADR). As a company that is recognised by the chamber of commerce and industry (IHK) as a training company, we provide the training courses to hazardous goods drivers in various business centres. The driver files the tests required in the basic course and the respective required advanced course to the responsible IHK.
We instruct hazardous goods drivers in the relevant regulations, especially the handling, marking and documentation of the goods during transport.

System of hazardous goods driver training courses
Basic course for hazardous goods drivers
Drivers require a basic course if they transport hazardous goods (piece and bulk goods) in amounts that require marking using vehicles and their trailers. It is a basic prerequisite for participation in the advanced courses.
Tank advanced course
Drivers require this advanced course if they transport hazardous goods in fixed tanks (e.g. tank lorries) or attachable tanks with a volume of more than 1,000 litres. It also entitles the driver to transport hazardous goods in electric vehicles with a total volume of more than 1,000 litres and tank containers, movable tanks or gas containers with several elements (MEGC) with an individual capacity of 3,000 litres on one transport unit.
Class 1 advanced course
This entitles drivers to transport explosive substances or objects named in Annex A of the ADR, regardless of the total permissible weight of the vehicle. In addition, the qualification as per § 20 of the explosives law is required.
Class 7 advanced course
This entitles drivers to transport radioactive substances or objects named in Annex A of the ADR, regardless of the total permissible weight of the vehicle.
Advanced course
The validity of the ADR appraisal is 5 years from the date the basic course test is passed. 12 months before the end of the validity period, it is possible to extend the certification by attending advanced training with subsequent testing. There is no deferment period. The certification expires on the exact date of expiry.
Background information
Far more than 280,000 hazardous goods drivers have been trained since the introduction of the tank lorry driver training in 1979. Since 1991, other vehicle drivers have required training if they were transporting hazardous goods in amounts requiring markings on public paths and squares. Since January 1, 2007, drivers of vehicles that require markings and whose maximum permissible total weight is less than 3.5 tons also require a valid training certificate.
