OHSAS 18001
Optimize occupational safety, reduce operating costs
The occupational safety management system (AMS) OHSAS 18001 "Occupational Health and Safety Management System – Specification" was developed in cooperation with several standardization and certification associations. The impetus for this came from the desire within the industry to also be able to incorporate occupational safety into existing management systems in order to ensure constant improvement of operational effectiveness. The standard will be used in all sectors around the world. The number of certificates increases significantly from year to year. More and more international companies are using occupational safety management systems as per OHSAS 18001 to minimize risks in their production sites around the world.
Use of an effective occupational safety management system:
- Recognition of legal requirements (e.g. operational safety ordinance)
- Planning, implementation and control of occupational safety requirements (ArbSchG, ASiG, BetrSichV, BG, authorities, insurance companies)
- The clear definition of tasks, competencies and responsibilities leads to an organization that will withstand the scrutiny of the courts.
- Relief in the event of damage as the result of proven compliance with instructions, training and monitoring duties
- Reduction of the number and seriousness of work-related accidents
- Reduction of downtimes and their associated costs for production plants
- Improved added value due to fewer down days and less material damage
- Reduction of insurance premiums (BG) due to fewer work-related accidents
- High compatibility with the management systems DIN EN ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
Quality through accreditation
The certification of occupational safety management systems as per OHSAS 18001 has been performed by TÜV NORD CERT since 2001. From the beginning, TÜV NORD CERT has set high standards for their service. Thus, only occupational safety experts are used as AMS auditors. To confirm this quality, TÜV NORD CERT became the first German certification association to be accredited by the Swiss accreditation centre SAS for OHSAS 18001 in February 2006. Since February 8, 2008, this accreditation has been carried out by the TGA.
TÜV NORD CERT offers companies support on the way to a safe future. Many of our auditors have more than one qualification – either as experienced occupational safety experts or as quality and environmental auditors. This means that the auditing team can be put together to meet the specific requirements of any company.
