Test lab for lithium-ion batteries - TÜV NORD expands activities in eMobility
Saarbrücken: Together with CETECOM, TÜV NORD has developed the first functioning system for testing of lithium-ion batteries. With the new and innovative test laboratory, the Group is expanding its activities in the electromobility sector, with the main focus on battery and charging safety.
The battery test lab was built in Saarbrücken by CETECOM while at the same time undergoing TÜV NORD qualification processes, setting a milestone in the development of electromobility. Lithium-ion batteries are used as energy storage units for electric vehicles, in particular passenger cars. They are one of the secondary cells currently available with the highest energy density per unit of mass.
"Through our work together with CETECOM, we can link know-how with hardware in order to create a complete and functioning battery test system - an important step for further development of electric vehicles. The high energy density in lithium-ion accumulator batteries can also mean danger in case of malfunction, so it's even more important to continue development work in this area ", explains Axel Richter, responsible for electric vehicles at TÜV NORD.
Both the test equipment developed by TÜV NORD and CETECOM and the test procedures for the batteries fulfil unified standards, so that the results can be reproduced all over the world.
"Our test benches are complete and have been validated, and our laboratory infrastructure means that we are also able to perform co-called "destructive" testing of lithium-ion batteries safely. This means that we can fulfil the requirements set for us by industry whilst at the same time promoting a high standard for battery safety throughout the world", explains the CEO of CETECOM, Gerhard Schirra.
The lithium-ion batteries are tested in Saarbrücken for their resistance to mechanical, electrical and climatic stress. In addition, their reaction to "misuse" - for example caused by a short circuit - is assessed. The batteries are also subjected to a crash test in order to establish if they fulfil the UN rules for battery transportation. The expert partnership between TÜV NORD (www.tuev-nord.com) and CETECOM now (www.cetecom.com) provides an independent testing body for all areas of electromobility.
